Butterfly Landings This is a depiction of the Monarch butterfly migration across North America. When the spring sunshine penetrates the deep forests of Mexico, millions of butterflies are awakened from their hibernation. They fly from the forest, chasing the sunlight cross the blue sky, traveling 4500 miles from south to north. At least four generations of butterflies take the trip together, and return before the onset of the harsh Canadian winter. The ancient cycle continues forward and backward, again and again. “展翼” 我透過這張極度抽象的畫來表現北美帝王斑蝶的年度大遷徙. 當春陽穿透墨西哥 幽深的大森林那一刻, 陽光喚醒了數百萬隻疊掛棲息冬眠在樹林的斑蝶. 被喻為”大自然界 最壯麗驚奇的一景”, 帝王斑蝶展翼高飛追逐陽光, 縱越北美藍天從南往北, 飛過美國而終 於加拿大, 直到酷寒降臨之前, 南飛返回祖先們冬眠之林, 其間是延續五代的4500哩長征. 周而復始, 生生不息! 36"x48", 2016, Acrylic and oil pastel on canvas |
Leavings and Roots In Taiwanese culture, I was taught that “Falling leaves land near the roots, no matter how tall the tree is.” This old saying speaks especially to those away from their homeland. No matter where we are in the world, we often still find ourselves aligned to the roots of our culture and traditions. “根” 我是個從小被教育”樹高萬丈落葉歸根”的臺灣人. 這古老的諺語, 特別指的是離鄉背 景的遊子, 當年老甚至過世後, 都應該回到出生長大的故鄉. 這幅畫表現了人們不論落居何 處,皆會緊握著自己的根源文化傳統, 就如同花開葉冒皆生長延續於樹幹與根. 36"x48", 2016, Acrylic and oil pastel on canvas |
Motherland Every being has a motherland. No matter where we are, how we move, or who we have become, our hearts tend to hold a spare corner which prays for peace in our motherland. I created this piece with Japanese maple tree branches, red strings, and origami cranes that I folded. All of these elements remind me of my mother who had planted the tree with me, sewed with the same red strings, and who used to fold and play origami with me. This beautiful little paper bird in Japanese culture can be a symbol of happiness, hope, healing, and the wings which carry souls into paradise. “母親大地” 是我為”無家遷徙和難民”做的裝置藝術. 這作品裡的每個元素皆與我母親連繫著. 日本紅楓與紅絲線是她當年來多倫多探望我時與我種下與做裁縫用的; 折紙鶴(代表和平祈福)則是我小時候她教我的. 這件作品表達著: 無論是我們的祖國或第二故鄉我們都祈禱那是個充滿和平與愛的地方! Without Borders In tribute to the sculpture Jesus the Homeless outside of Regis College and the heartbreaking photo of Alan Kurdi, I wanted to describe how love and compassion should have no borders, including those drawn by religion, culture, and race. “愛無國界” 受到”無家的耶穌雕像”(置於Regis College校門旁)和溺斃的敘利亞逃難男孩照片的影響和啟示, 我畫下腦海中一直浮現的影像. 我認為愛與惻隱之心應無疆界, 包括在宗教文化和種族的不同世界裡! 30"x30", 2016, Acrylic and oil pastel on canvas |
